About Archie
I'm a professional painter with what can be described as a 'portfolio' career. It's a posh way of saying a scramble around with lots of jobs so I can afford to paint when the paintings aren't selling regularly! I currently work at L. Cornelissens art shop, The Essential School of Painting, West Dean Frieze Art Fair and I run my own classes.
As a painter, I exhibit pretty regularly. Last year I was in the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award show at The National Portrait Gallery, and earlier this year I won a prize at the Jackson's Art Prize. I'm a big reader, and general cultural devourer, and believe firmly that your painting influences should extend beyond just paintings

I approach each student on an individual basis, preferring to enable the student to come up with their own approaches and ideas rather than imposing myself upon them.
I have incredibly strong art historical knowledge and materials knowledge, as well as knowledge of the contemporary art world and its systems.
The lessons should be 45 minutes. I have over ten years' experience teaching, having taught privately, at Hampstead School of Art, The Art Academy. Currently, I teach at West Dean and the Essential School of Painting.
I believe that technique should derive out of concept rather than the other way round, but that doesn't mean that I won't help with technical approaches to your painting. I will come up with simple structured plans and ideas that will enable you to progress your painting by yourself.
These lessons are ideally for A level students and above, ideally BA students and MA students, as well as part-time adult students. I will perhaps though consider GCSE students if I feel the student possesses the will to continue painting beyond that point
