This means the hotel gets $27 in miles and the hotel gets $2, for a total of $29. Who got the extra dollar? Solution: The extra dollar doesn't exist. The problem is misdirection. The friends paid $25, the hotel paid $25. The $2 tip is already included in the $25. The friends kept $3 for which the calculation is $25 + $3 = $28.
