About David
I've taught writing and literature at San Francisco State University of almost twenty years. I am an award-winning professional writer published by Salon, RIFF Magazine, and others. I'm also a musician, science fiction author, and aging skateboarder. I estimate that I have graded more than 35,000 pages of college essays in my career, which has scarred me deeply, but also has made me a fantastic editor. I have very high standards for written work, but it's important to me that students see me as a coach rather than a cop.

My goal is to make everything from basic sentence boundaries to postmodern literary criticism interesting and relevant to smart young people who haven't yet been inspired to really engage with the act of reading and writing. I offer tailored reading and writing lessons based on individual needs and goals. I'm proud of my ability to get young people to care about reading and writing, as well as my ability to forge bonds with students by presenting the info in a way that's relevant to their lives. I believe that to become a good writer every student must learn to become comfortable with their own voice and style, especially in this new age of AI. So much of what I do is convincing young people their ideas are worth sharing.
