About JENNIFER

I currently teach English composition courses at Mt. San Jacinto College and California State University, San Marcos. As a lifelong student of English in academic and global communities and over twenty years of experience in worldwide educational travel, I am happiest on the road with a book and my computer to take it all in and write it all down.

After a 16-year career as a flight attendant for United Airlines, I decided to settle down and return to school. Though my travels are far from over, I slowed down long enough to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Journalism from the University of Maryland, University College and to further support my academic goals with a Master of Arts in English from National University in San Diego. I am a transplant from Washington D.C. and the Eastern Shore of Maryland where I worked as a journalist and editor for a small but historical jewel of a newspaper, The Star Democrat. I also interned and worked as a freelance writer for National Geographic Society, International Editions and National Geographic Travel Books.

As a motivated teacher of reading and composition in cultural, sociological, and historical contexts to English and non-native speakers of the global student population, I have a profound passion for the written word and the heart that goes into it. My ultimate goal is to share that passion with my students and inspire their own lifelong love affair with learning.

I scaffold a thematic lesson over several weeks based on the ways in which writing (re)produces particular social constructions and power relations, such as those around gender, race, nationality, class, ability, and sexuality. Students begin with a lecture on cognitive science and the concept of Daniel Kahneman’s “fast versus slow thinking” and take a Learning Style Assessment (VARK) in conjunction with a reflective writing journal on the importance of critical thinking and their own role as stakeholders in their education. Next, they examine two personal narratives from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: her TED Talk “The Danger of A Single Story” and her article “Shut Up and Write.” I model annotating and asking critical questions of these texts and the themes they explore. Students then write their own personal narrative based on this theme of “empowerment through identity, education, and self- and others- awareness.” Who are they, where did they come from, what are their goals and why, and what is their relation to their local and global community? At this juncture, students will start exploring and curating authors who speak to them and with whom they connect. The final writing assignment in this scaffold is a rhetorical analysis of an author of their choice, someone with whom they can engage with in voice, experience, and identity; someone who inspires them. This lesson plan challenges students to examine and define their own inherent beliefs that tie to critical concepts of culture, tradition, gender, ability, and race while working to see others around them with a different “lens.” The exercise also encourages those real-time, lifelong learning skills by developing active listening, asking deeper questions, and Daniel Kahneman’s “slow thinking” practices.
