About Valerie
I have spent ten years tutoring programming, working closely with 470 students across a genuinely wide range of ages and starting skill levels throughout that time. My professional background is somewhat unconventional, having spent the earlier part of my career as a self-employed developer building small business applications before moving into structured teaching. That practical, project-driven background heavily influences how I teach today, since I believe most students learn technical subjects best by building something tangible they can genuinely point to. I am naturally an informal and conversational teacher, and my sessions often feel more like a collaborative working session than a traditional formal class. What I find most rewarding is watching a student move from anxiously checking every line of code with me to confidently debugging independently.

I organise my teaching around genuinely building rather than simply memorising, meaning nearly every topic connects back to something the student can create, run, and personally test for themselves. I usually start new students with a small guided project, because writing simple working code gives immediate visible feedback that keeps motivation genuinely high during early frustration. I avoid long lecture style explanations in favour of short, focused mini lessons no longer than ten minutes, always followed immediately by guided hands on practice. Students keep a personal error log documenting mistakes and exactly how they fixed them, which I review periodically to spot recurring weaknesses before they grow larger. Sessions end with a short reflection question asking the student to explain, entirely in their own words, the most important idea covered that day.
