About Rich

I hadn’t consistently done any kind of exercise for many years. I was busier than I’d ever been, slept more poorly than ever (a few kids will do that!), and was just older. I had serious pain in my neck regularly. I had had issues with my low back on a recurring basis, and had had a disc issue in my neck that physical therapists, chiropractors, and physicians trained in osteopathic manipulation could hardly help improve. I was tired of being hurt and feeling weak. I decided it was time to do something about it. I wanted something that could fit into my schedule, didn’t require the crazy numbers of hours in the gym that I had spent before and I was mostly concerned with a full body strength. I didn’t want to do 10 exercises per training session. I focused on the squat, deadlift, and overhead press, later adding bench press and chin ups. I set up a small simple area in my garage to lift with a barbell and some plates. Using a simpler method, I spent far less time in my garage gym working out, and even with my age and less sleep time (remember, recovery is where strength is built), I soon was lifting more weight than ever in less than 6 months. ! I felt much better, and more capable. My shoulder and neck pain were diminishing as I learned to do the lifts properly. So I was hooked on the simplicity and effectiveness of this kind of training. Because it’s effective and there’s a technical component to it, it was fun for me too! Now I think about how many people of any age could improve their lives by getting stronger. Strength improves every other aspect of physical fitness - improves the cyclist’s performance as much as the triathlete and basketball player, or the mom or dad of a few kids. I want to help people get stronger for whatever life throws at them because while it may be harder than doing nothing, it’s easily worth the time and effort invested in the long run. I hope to help more people see this reality and experience it for themselves. It doesn’t take much time spent in a gym to realize that most people don’t know what they’re doing and most of them are not getting stronger or meeting their goals. Often there are not any goals. I want to help change that for YOU. I have a Master’s degree in Workforce Development with an emphasis in Adult Learning. I've been training adults in various roles throughout my career.

I aim to make training fun, hard, simple, and effective, even for people who have never picked up a barbell or done any kind of strength training. I emphasize barbell training in my coaching because of its simplicity and because it’s easily loadable in incremental amounts to drive continuous progress through a cycle of stress, recovery, and adaptation over a long period of time. What to Expect Barbell based training - We use the four primary compound lifts - squat, deadlift, overhead press, and bench press - as our primary way to get people strong (albeit not the only way). We choose these exercises because they use the most muscle mass, over the longest range of motion, allowing you to lift the most weight, which is the best way to build full body strength for life. We seek to do these lifts with great form, so we learn the proper way our body is designed to move. These movement patterns aren’t always natural, so part of my job is to help you get them right. Moving the way your body was designed, and progressively increasing load, is one of the best ways to feel better, protect yourself from injury and sometimes deal with pain associated with poor movement patterns as you get stronger. Personal - Not just programming. Not just form critique. Coaching, tailored to you. Flexibility - Online coaching allows you to workout and upload videos anytime you are able to workout, and anywhere you prefer, even if you’re traveling, and with whatever equipment you have available. Relationship - I seek to build a meaningful coaching relationship with each client so I can know what they need, where they’re coming from, so I can get them where they want to be. Accountability - You’ll get thoughtful and constructive feedback about your lifts promptly, and regular check-ins. I aim to provide feedback within 24 hours of your scheduled training days, or let you know if I’m unable to for some odd reason. Expect a 48 hour turnaround time during weekends and holidays. Knowledge - I don’t know everything, but I know enough to help you and I may need to research and learn more if there’s a sticking point in your training we have to work through together. Growth - I expect most people will steadily progress under my coaching. Although there are no guarantees, I have a lot of confidence that if the work is put in and recovery happens, you will get stronger and continue to do so.
