About Rachel
I'm a published author, tutor, and screenwriter with an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University, where I serve as Online Poetry Editor for The Columbia Journal. My work spans essays, poetry, and fiction, and I bring that same range to the writers I teach.

I teach the how-tos of essays — including college admissions essays — along with poetry and short fiction.
Most green writers want to sound like the writers they admire, the ones who walked long before them (Oscar Wilde, J.K. Rowling). So the first lesson may be a little surprising, because I wish to work with your voice, and your voice alone.
My job is to unearth it through generative writing practices. We start by figuring out what you're actually writing about. Then comes a stream-of-consciousness exercise, where you pour out every word and phrase you associate with the piece. From there we cluster those words and phrases into a roadmap — a sense of order and structure, of where the piece should land and the best way to get it there. Then we execute, and we iterate until it's done.
If you already have a draft, we take a different route: we talk through where it falls short and where a little augmenting can let the words breathe, and best of all--let your words shine.
