About Toby
I am a university lecturer teaching architecture and looking to support students needing extra help. I have been a lecturer at Northeastern University and University of the Arts London. I have also taught at the University of Warwick, Architectural Association School of Architecture and Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation on a freelance basis. I have taught students ranging from secondary to PhD levels. I am a graduate of the prestigious Architectural Association School of Architecture. I hold a PgCert in Academic Practice for Art, Design and Communication, associate fellowship at the higher education academy and a level 2 certificate in counselling. I am deeply passionate about supporting students from marginalised backgrounds in accessing and excelling in a higher education environment. I foreground inclusion, centring the inclusion of diverse cultures in my teaching as well as teaching that supports students with disabilities. I have previously taught at special educational needs schools and have in-depth knowledge on how to support neurodivergent (ADHD, dyslexia, autism) and disabled students. I am very passionate about mental health and wellbeing, having extensive experience supporting people with depression and anxiety. I am a flexible and open-minded teacher who can help nurture students' creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. I can help students anchor broad and wild ideas into a feasible and concise design proposal. A particular strength of mine is making complex information accessible. My lessons are deeply student centred. I orient my teaching around the students and their academic and career goals. In our first session, I will give students the opportunity to openly speak about what they hope to get out of the lessons. We can gauge students' technical skills, conceptual development, presentation skills and confidence. I will then tailor my teaching to best support their goals. I am able to support students in a wide variety of ways: - Software and technical skill tutoring including Autodesk AutoCAD, Rhinoceros3D, Grasshopper, Cinema4D, Blender, model making and technical drawing. - One-on-one tutoring for design projects including conceptual development, design, technical detailing and graphical presentation. - Coaching for presenting projects and communicating ideas. - Soft skills such as time management, networking, communication and wellbeing. - Study skills for students with disabilities and neurodivergent students (ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism etc.) - Interview preparation for jobs and university admissions I can also provide bespoke support for students at various levels For secondary school students: - Portfolio development and university application coaching - Career and academic guidance for next steps after graduating. For University Students (undergraduate and postgraduate): - Conceptual development of projects - Software and technical skill clinics for specific design project goals - History and theory tutoring - Essay and written submission tutoring - Career guidance including CV and portfolio reviews. - Mental health and resilience. - Navigating university as a person from an underrepresented background.
