About Suzie

I qualified as an English teacher in 1995 after and since then have worked with students of all ages and abilities in a range of settings. I taught GCSE and A-levels in English in mainstream comprehensive schools and a Pupil Referral unit; more recently I have worked as Head of English and then Head of sixth form at a secondary special school where I devised and taught a curriculum for students at the very earliest stages of reading and writing. I have prepared students for the 11+ and private school entrance exams as well as helping undergraduate students with Dyslexia to plan and structure their essays. Enhanced DBS cert and QTS certificates available

I believe that in order for effective learning to take place, students of all ages and abilities need to feel comfortable with their teacher. I work hard to build up a rapport with my students as quickly as possible, identifying their needs and discussing their personal targets. When preparing students for external exams, I am particularly skilled at improving students’ grades significantly by honing in on the key exam tips and techniques required for each question presented by the different exam boards. Each student is treated as an individual and I adapt my teaching techniques accordingly. After each lesson I can provide a log of what has been learnt and each individual’s next steps. I am patient, friendly and flexible. Please note I am not a qualified TESOL/TEFL teacher.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

As a child, I loved escaping into the imaginary world of books, particularly loving Enid Blyton's stories like The Magic Faraway Tree and The Famous Five! I was desperate to find the Land of Take What you Want at the top of every tree I saw! I've also always had a real love for words and the power they have for good or bad. An English degree with lots of reading and then teaching in secondary schools and special schools was a natural step for me. What I enjoy about tuition is the ability to really address the particular needs of an individual student and make a real difference to their grades and hopefully their lives.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

All English teachers have their favourite and least favourite books to teach! I enjoy teaching storylines that I know will have a real connection with students. Of Mice and Men has such a strong ending and I've yet to meet a student who doesn't feel at least a little upset or shocked when they find out what's happening. Even if they pretend not to.....!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I can't say I have one clear role-model as such. I think Ruby Wax's work on raising awareness of mental health issues is great and I really like Michelle Obama, particularly her support for girl's education. My secret guilty heroine however is the character Lizzie Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. I love her independence, sense of fun and mostly that she doesn't let anyone push her around!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs to work hard to build a strong trusting relationship with students and if appropriate with their family too. This will develop a student's self-belief and help them take risks with their learning in order to make progress. A tutor must be forensic about analysing where the gaps in learning are for each individual and then devise a tailored plan to address them. Tutors must be sensitive in reading a student's response within a lesson and adapt the activity or the pace moment by moment in order to maximise learning and maintain a student's confidence.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I remember one particular student I taught from about 15 years ago who was a real success story. He'd been unable to attend school for a year and his self esteem was so low, he could hardly hold his head up to look at me, never mind speak! Building his confidence and gaining his trust took time and patience but in the end I managed to get him to take both GCSEs in English instead of just the one and he got B grades in both. More importantly he was able to hold his head up high and went on to do A-levels at college. It just shows how vital a role education can play in changing young people's whole lives. His mum's message in the farewell card holds a very special place in my office ....and in my heart!
    .
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I think many English teachers get frustrated by the choice of set texts in the National Curriculum and what sometimes feels like too much emphasis on "classics" by pre-20th century white men! Whilst these should of course be read, it'd be great to have the choice of more texts to teach at GCSE which reflect today's teenagers' lives; more from the twentieth century and more multicultural texts!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion within teaching English is using drama and multi-sensory approaches to really engage students. I have a favourite lesson to introduce Shakespeare to younger children or those with SEND, where I set up the classroom as the witches' hideout from Macbeth. I use a smoking cauldron and candles to create the atmosphere and we take it in turns to drop the gruesome ingredients from the play into the cauldron whilst chanting the words from the witches' spell!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I'm a superprof because I treat each student as a unique individual and am always on the lookout for imaginative ways to improve their learning.
