About Oscar
Experience
I graduated with a BA in Music from Durham University, specialising in composition during my third year. Elected areas of study also included Choral Conducting, Orchestration and Counterpoint. I also hold a DipABRSM qualification in piano and passed Grade 8 with distinction prior to that. Since leaving Durham in 2016, I have been teaching for four years. I worked as a freelance piano teacher in my home county of Northamptonshire for a year and then as a peripatetic teacher at Barnard Castle School, teaching one to one piano and organ lessons.
From 2018-2020, I had the pleasure of teaching Music for two years at Blundell’s School in Devon where I was the Graduate Music Assistant and Chapel Organist, teaching Year 7 all the way to Year 13. While at Blundell’s, I completed a teaching apprenticeship and I now hold Qualified Teacher Status. At GCSE, I specialised in the composition coursework, and 40% of this year’s cohort achieved a grade 9, with 60% achieving a grade 7-9. At A Level, it was a pleasure to see that the classes I taught achieved 60% A-A*. I really enjoyed helping students with a range of musical backgrounds and abilities improve their performance across GCSE and A-level.
Although I loved teaching in the classroom, as well as leading several orchestras and playing the organ for school services, I am excited to move onto a new venture now that my teacher training has ended, where I will be pursuing an MA in Orchestration and Composition with Chichester University via Thinkspace Education. I really enjoy helping students learn and I’m looking forward to continuing this online.

Methodology
I will tailor my lessons to help a student improve on a specific area of difficulty. I can provide support with all areas of the listening and coursework components of GCSE and A-level music, graded Music Theory exams as well as undergraduate harmony, counterpoint and analysis. I aim to deliver lessons that respond best to a student’s preferred style of learning through prescribed listening, analysis tasks and compositional exercises.
