A recent student came to me in the middle of the summer before his second grade year. His first grade teacher had reported that he read below grade level and had placed him in a remedial reading group. His twin sister was reading above grade level but he hated reading and cried when asked to read at home. His grandma called me and begged for any help I could give. By the time 2nd grade began, he eagerly devoured new books (and loved to show off his new reading abilities to his parents and sister) and had above grade level comprehension but was still below grade level in reading accuracy. By Christmas of his second grade year, he was reading well above grade level in accuracy and comprehension and no longer required any outside intervention.

I specialize in teaching reading to children in grades 1 through 8. Although every child and problem is unique, my students will fall into at least one of these categories:
* can correctly read words but doesn't understand what's been read
* can't seem to crack the code to match letters with sounds
* reads word-by-word instead of being able to read by connecting words into phrases and sentences
* school teacher has commented on low reading level
* doesn't like to read
* can't answer (or takes an extremely long time to answer) reading comprehension questions in social studies, history, or science class
I very strongly believe every learner is different, learns in their own way and at their own rate. Therefore, every learner's lesson will be very different. However there are similarities.
Some students learn best with strict structure. These lessons are always the same with little to no change other than content (the actual blocks used depend on the needs of the individual student). An example of a 60 minute lesson structure:
* 2-3 minutes of "connection time" to share a personal story from the week or small talk to strengthen teacher/student bond
* 3-7 minutes of rote reading of individual words focused on recognizing frequent word endings and patterns. (Not comprehension based. One week might be words ending with "ate". We review the words, talk about them, practice. Then the student does a 1 minute timed reading. Once the student is able to improve recognition rate by 15% with 95% accuracy, we begin learning a new ending.)
* 5-10 minutes of student selected reading. (Student selects the reading material. No limitations are given unless the content matter is inappropriate. Purpose: reading enjoyment. Also, this gives the child practice at choosing appropriate reading.)
* 10 minutes of teacher selected reading and vocabulary work.
* 3-5 minutes of vocabulary and spelling work based on overall needs. (Often done during writing or game time instead of stand alone.)
* 10 minutes of limited student selected reading and comprehension work. (Student selects reading material from given choices.)
* 3-15 minutes of writing. (Reading and writing are closely related skills. They must be practiced together for maximum effect.)
* 10 minutes of teacher selected reading and explicit reading skill work.
* Up to 10 minutes of reading games.

Other students need to be more in control of the lesson. For these students, I might present a list of activities and ask the student what we should do next. Others may have a strong interest in a topic in which case, as much as possible, most reading would be focused around this topic. Some students have very different needs at every lesson.
I use a 4 step process to learn about the specific needs and preferences of your child. The first step is to talk to you during a FREE consultation. The consultation gives you an opportunity to let me know about specific reading problems, child preferences, comments from teachers, your goals for your child, and anything else you might want to share that would help me better help your child.
During the consultation I will give you a link to specific readings chosen for your child. This is your child's FREE reading assessment and is the second step. Some of the readings will be made up stories and some will be based on science or social studies. The readings will be at several different levels from below grade level to above grade level. Each reading will include comprehension questions and vocabulary questions. The results of the assessment give me additional insight into the needs of your child.
Once the assessment is completed, your child is ready to begin lessons! The first lesson (always FREE) is the third step. By the time I meet with your child, I have written several tentative goals for your child (immediate and long-term) and have a probable plan written for reaching those goals. That plan is used beginning with the very first lesson! Immediately after the lesson, I'll make any necessary changes to the plan and goals to create your personalized learning plan.
Having a plan in place and following it from the beginning leads to a very strong start. However, things change. Your child will meet goals. Possibly progress at a rate different than expected. Unexpected problems may appear. The plan is only helpful if it's correct. Therefore, the fourth step in the process involves ongoing observations of your child's progress, regular communication with you and anyone else you might want me to talk with, and updates to your child's plan and goals as needed.
