About Catherine
I recently graduated from Oxford with a high 2:1 degree in Biological Sciences. I thoroughly enjoyed my education at all stages and would love to be able to give back and help others to be able to achieve, and study their subjects at whatever university they wish. I have been tutoring both online and in-person for 2 years now, with over 200 hours of tutoring experience in GCSE Science, Maths and French. I currently tutor 4 GCSE students online and so have developed and adapted my teaching skills so that I can help students to find more inspiration and excitement in their studies despite the difficult lockdown situations. My Biology degree has allowed me to develop not only high quality analytical and mathematical skills but also polished writing skills and science communication. These skills provide me with a strong cross-curricular basis, and I believe the ability to communicate science is in particular an essential quality of a tutor/teacher. I also studied Maths and Physics to A-Level so have a grounding in the sciences in general. In my final year of University I gained experience leading an after school club on the environment for primary school children. Teaching new scientific concepts to 7-11 year olds developed my skills in simplifying complex material for a more clear understanding in younger children. I have also been a student ambassador for the Access department of my college, helping underprivileged students to get into Oxford. This, in addition to having got into Oxford from a state school which provided little help, means that I thoroughly understand the application process and would love to provide guidance on personal statements and the interview process with students who are considering applying, especially those that receive little guidance at school. In general I have a patient and warm approach to teaching, moving slowly through topics, with a focus on each individual child and what they want to gain from sessions.
