About Sharlyn
Learning the flute as an adult can be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences, especially when you have an instructor who understands your goals and works with you to create a personalized path forward. My flute lessons are designed to be enjoyable, approachable, and enriching, tailored to adults, particularly those over 50, who are seeking to explore or re-engage with music. Whether you're picking up the flute for the first time or dusting it off after many years, my approach focuses on building both technical proficiency and musical expression. I understand that everyone learns differently, so I strive to adapt my teaching style to suit each individual’s learning pace, whether you’re a visual learner, an auditory learner, or someone who needs a more hands-on approach. Throughout our lessons, I emphasize positive reinforcement, ensuring that progress is celebrated, no matter how small. We will focus on developing your tone, breath control, and articulation, but we will also explore your musical interests—whether that’s learning a favorite song, playing in a community group, or simply using the flute as a relaxing, creative outlet. I incorporate various modern teaching tools such as audio and video feedback, interactive learning apps, and slow-down software, which allow you to practice at your own speed and track your progress. I am committed to fostering a space where you can feel encouraged, inspired, and, above all, excited to continue your flute journey.

There’s something uniquely powerful about learning an instrument later in life—it reconnects you with curiosity, memory, and joy. My flute instruction is crafted specifically for adult learners seeking a fulfilling, low-pressure way to explore music. I work from the premise that every student is different, and my job is to listen as much as I teach. I incorporate traditional methods—scales, breathing exercises, repertoire exploration—alongside fun, flexible practices like “follow-the-flute” echo games, journaling after lessons, and progress playlists to track your development. I use simple digital tools to help you practice smart, not hard. Most importantly, I create a space where every attempt is valued and every mistake is a stepping stone. My mission is to help you express yourself with clarity and joy, one note at a time.
