About Karl
I hold bachelor (1979) and master (1983) degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Maine. I have tutored students from my graduate school days, through the years, one way or another; including helping a Vietnamese student learn technical terms in the English language. I have worked with and taught people from all over the US and Canada, including people from several American Indian tribes. Over the years, I have learned to deal with and tutor people from different cultural backgrounds than my own. In the subjects I tutor, I never shame a student, no dunce caps. In potable water treatment the enemies are diseases and toxins; people are NOT, repeat NOT, the enemy unless they try to deprive people of water or try to poison the water. I apply this principle in my tutoring as well.

I am used to training water plant operators and other people not well versed in chemistry or math. There is no shame in this, nobody is born knowing these things. To use one example, to teach these operators what a pH is and why it matters; first I had to teach them what an exponent is, then what a logarithm is, and what a concentration is; only then I could teach them what a pH really is. Many (not all) people have problems with chemistry because they are having problems with algebra again, in addition to all the new concepts introduced in chemistry. I will work with students in learning concepts at any level in chemistry or the math underlying chemistry. I tutor all levels of chemistry up to physical chemistry, including organic and quantitative chemistry. I also tutor math up to calculus and freshman college physics with calculus.
