About Richard
For over 15 years, I was employed as a statistician for the Education Department. I used mathematics to query data and provide models for funding, course duration and viability based on student numbers, exam results and government subsidies. I studied mathematics at Open University part time, achieving a BSc Honours, and also completed the CTLLS Teaching Certificate. I have worked as a tutor in the adult sector, as well as a supply teacher in secondary schools, and a support teacher in primary schools. I have experience of working in specialist autistic and behavioural schools as well as marking GCSE papers for AQA.

I believe mathematics is like a tower. In the same way you could not progress to the fifth floor without passing through levels one to four, without a good understanding of basics, you will never be able to use or make sense of higher level concepts. In my experience, because of the time constrictions of school curricula, students are often moved onto the next topic without fully grasping an idea, which leads to a loss of confidence and belief that maths is impossible. Starting with the basics, I will aim to find and target these gaps in your understanding, using your own interests and hobbies to give practical examples.
