About Eleanor
My passion for learning, especially STEM subjects, resulted in a BS in electrical engineering (Rice, Magna Cum Laude), an MD (Baylor College of Medicine), and an MBA (Harvard Business School, Baker Scholar). Along the way I had a terrific career in medical technology, biotechnology, and other healthcare sectors - growing start-ups, advising corporations and providers, and conducting health policy research. There are skills I developed during my career that I believe are valuable for tutoring – translating complex concepts, presentation skills, and a “high EQ.” One of my areas of expertise, as I was both an EE and MD, was translating complicated technical concepts into language marketing and consumer audiences could easily understand. I also have years of experience in communication roles. For example, making presentations to audiences of various sizes, types, and locales, as well as being interviewed for TV and radio. In terms of Emotional Quotient (EQ), mine was advanced through empathetic connections with patients and later distressed employees and became an important strength. Now retiring from this career, tutoring offers me the perfect fit for giving back – there’s an ideal match of skills, passions, and a critical national need. Based on my instructional experiences - such as high school tutoring, creating / teaching a course to cytologists for FDA certification on an AI device, and coaching TEDx BeaconStreet speakers - I am quite confident I can help students significantly improve their grades. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my college-aged “children,” watching the Bruins play hockey, cinema, collaborating with my 90-year-old father on geochemistry papers, playing billiards (physics!), and traveling. Despite what the degrees and long career might suggest, I am decidedly not intimidating. In fact, I have a warm, inviting, funny personality that students find engaging.

My teaching strategy involves individualized lesson plans, prioritized by topics for which the student needs the most help. Content follows assigned texts, but is supplemented with other educational resources and real-world examples to facilitate understanding of complex concepts. A typical lesson plan includes learning objectives, learning activities to explain the topics, practice problems we work through together, check to assess what is clear and what needs review, conclusion with summary and preview of next lesson. My remote physics lessons are for any high school grade students taking any level of physics, including AP physics.
