About Eileen
My first degree is a joint honours degree in History and Sociology and my master's and PhD degrees are both in the discipline of Sociology. Whilst at Salford, the OU, and then at Massey University, I taught across Sociology, Politics, Criminology, and Social Work programmes, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate modules on sociology, social theory, political science and comparative systems of welfare, social policy, youth justice and sociology and sociological research methods. At Massey University between 2014-16 I taught the Government & Politics module for Level 5 (year 2) undergraduates on the BSc Soc. Science Degree programme. I have a PGCE in FE/HE teaching as well as being a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have for the past fifteen years taught GCSE/AS/A-Levels privately, initially face to face then from 2006, online; teaching 33 students, with 100% pass rate and 93% success rate, in students attaining a level 5 or level 4 grade in the exam. Furthermore, I currently act as an Associate Examiner for the AQA Exam Board in Sociology and I am an examiner for the AQA History NEA Complement 3. For the past three years, I have worked with several tutoring services agencies including Choice Home Tutoring services, and I currently have year 3 x Year 13 Politics and 7x Year 13 History Students with 6 achieving grade A (three A* in politics and three A* in History) the lowest grades achieved were Bs and all students gained places at their first-choice university. As well as specialising in teaching of the AQA Exam Board Papers in Politics, Sociology and History. I have extensive experience in the design and delivery of online courses (further developed by teaching degree courses online between 2020-2022). I love it in a session with students when they have what I call a ‘Eureka moment’ when a concept or issue suddenly clicks and all that hard work and reading that they have done pays off and it suddenly sparks their curiosity and they suddenly have a surge of energy and that's the most exciting aspect of teaching for me when that happens. I can then tap into that curiosity and motivation to scaffold the learning to further develop their critical analytical skills. That is what motivates my teaching.

All the international research attests to the fact no matter how academically able a student is or how interesting the material; that the students’ critical reflective ability diminishes as they become tired usually after about 30 minutes. Therefore, one-hour tutorials are broken down into 4 x 15-minute sessions involving 10-minute didactic (teaching) and five minutes for a student-led activity, linked to the lesson to the learning outcomes or assessment outcomes for the tutorial. In addition, at the end of the session for homework the student completes a reflective learning journal identifying five things they understood, five things they didn't understand that need further clarification from the tutor and how each issue links to the assessment objectives. In this way, the student is building up a repository of knowledge and skills related to the course material but also, developing skills as an independent learner so they can make the transition from a pedagogical to andragogical (adult-centred) learning and be proactive about their learning and development. Having taught in academia throughout the pandemic I am very skilled in online teaching using Moodle, Microsoft Teams, Zoom Whiteboard Adobe Connect and Canva to deliver good learning materials tailored to individual students' learning needs. Student evaluations of my teaching comment that I make learning fun but also create a safe learning environment to ask questions and develop ideas but also keep them focused on the course assessment objectives.
