About Matilda
I hold a Bachelor of International Studies with Distinction from RMIT, and am currently undertaking an honours year. During my undergrad, I successfully completed the entire Japanese language program offered at the university.
I have 18 months of tutoring experience, and have taken students from very minimal skills to advanced materials within that time. During 2020 we were able to maintain our regular lessons with a smooth transition to online lessons. In-person is of course preferable but I am pleased to say that I have extensive experience delivering either mode.
I am a very easygoing teacher, and I pride myself on being kind and understanding. My lessons are personalised to your learning style, I never push past a topic until we are both comfortable with your progress.
I prefer to work with Genki I & II, but I am happy to use another series if it is better for you.

My lessons begin with a little conversation practice for my advanced students, otherwise we dig into homework corrections together. I believe it is incredibly important to talk gently through mistakes together, and it also acts as revision from the previous week.
Next, we will go through a grammar or conjugation (verbs) lesson, and do some activities together so you can practice speaking and reading, until the end of the lesson.
We periodically will do a kanji lesson where we talk through the new characters for the chapter, or we might have a cultural note to go through, some language pointers.
That said, I am very flexible and open to teaching you in the best way you will learn, so I am open to changes wherever you may need :)

Details
My students sometimes prefer 90 minute lessons (as 1 hour can go by quite quickly) which are given at a discounted rate of $50 for the time period. I am very flexible to students' needs and happy to agree upon a time and frequency of lessons that works for you :)
My rate is based on my level of knowledge and experience, and is non-negotiable unless you are under financial difficulty (please don't hesitate to enquire).
