About Sophia
I have a BA in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz and am preparing for law school. My academic path was unconventional: I earned an AA from Berkeley City College while still in high school, becoming the first Berkeley High student to graduate with both a diploma and a college degree. Having balanced high school and college simultaneously, I understand students' needs at each stage and tailor my approach to fit them.

For middle and high schoolers, I build foundations in organization, analysis, reading comprehension, writing, and independent work. I help with English, essay writing, government, civics, and introductory psychology or social studies, breaking concepts into steps and building lasting study habits.
For high school and undergraduate students, I go deeper into analytical and persuasive writing, research skills, and coursework in psychology, political science, and the humanities, drawing on my studies in international law, democracy and governance, and persuasion and critical thinking. My experience as a Copy Editor and Administrative Writer, reviewing written work and giving writers specific, actionable feedback, directly shapes how I help students strengthen a thesis, tighten an argument, or revise a draft. My internship on a prison radio and book project, conducting legal research and working through feedback in weekly discussions, also makes me a strong fit for undergraduates interested in pre-law coursework, logical reasoning, or research and study skills.
Across all age groups, my approach is collaborative rather than lecture based. I ask questions that help students find their own argument or idea, then guide them in organizing and sharpening it, whether that's an essay outline, a research question, or a study plan. My goal is for students to leave each session not just with a better grade, but with tools they can use on their own: how to read critically, argue persuasively, manage their workload, and think through a problem with confidence.
