I have always approached teaching from a practical matter for requiring students to learn mathematics. For example, I have made sure that what ever topic I am sharing has physical components(in teaching percents, use the irs tax code to show reason for learning the topic; in teaching different units of measure, use a physical scuba tank and regulator to enhance the understanding).
I also used English vocabulary to break down the understanding of the nomenclature.
