About Elizabeth
As a tutor my top priority is to create a welcoming, judgment-free space where you can unmask, slow down and take your time. I have experience as both a college writing tutor, and a grade school classroom SPED assistant.
As a student who worked with tutors myself, my philosophy is personal. I struggled greatly in school due to my own mental health and learning challenges.
One of the reasons I was able to expand my love for writing was due to one of my wonderful tutors. She gave me the space and the patience I needed to unlock the skills I already possessed and use them to learn
In 6th grade, I was given a particular vocabulary assignment to come up with a sentence for each of my spelling words. I didn’t completely apprehend all the words, and the thought of writing 20 sentences was incredibly overwhelming. My anxiety was heightened and when I became anxious the harder it was for me to retain any information.
My homework tutor at the time stated something that dramatically transformed my perspective,
“I thought you liked to write stories.”
I paused for a moment,
Writing stories typically relaxed me.
"What if I make my sentences tell a story?"
That is exactly what I did. I took each of my spelling sentences and wrote them in a way that somewhat connected to the one before it. Before I knew it, I had finished my homework and actually understood the meaning behind the spelling words. I remember once I was finished, I wanted to keep writing. I had this urge to enhance the story! I was so proud that Friday after being told I aced my spelling test. I found a fun way to practice and memorize my words. I made the assignment my own through a skill I already possessed.
My tutoring philosophy is short and sweet. I aim to teach students how to access their talents and use them to learn. I want them to discover that there is more than one way to learn something and that the key to learning new things is applying what you already know.

A typical session is structured into four main sections.
Introduction and Goal Setting (10 minutes):
At the beginning of each session, I focus on building rapport with each student, identifying needs, and establishing clear goals for the session. For returning students, this time is used to catch up on their progress and discuss any challenges they are facing, as well as to review the goals set during our previous session.
Active Session (40 minutes):
During this portion, we work collaboratively towards achieving the student's specific objectives, which might include thesis development, proofreading, essay structure, or homework assistance, such as reviewing assigned readings for those struggling with comprehension. As we engage in these tasks, I introduce targeted tools and techniques designed to enhance their understanding of concepts or to provide them with more effective strategies.
Feedback and Reflection (5 minutes):
Together, we review the student’s work, focusing on their strengths and identifying areas for improvement. I offer constructive feedback and encourage them to reflect on their writing process, fostering a deeper understanding of their own development.
Goal Setting for the Next Session
(5 minutes):
We conclude our session by setting goals for our next meeting, ensuring that the student leaves with a clear sense of progress and direction.
What sets me apart as a tutor is the combination of personal experience and insight I have gained not only through my schooling but also through prior work and personal life experiences. As someone who lives with ADHD and anxiety, I understand how mental health challenges can impact learning.
I value patience and the importance of taking the time to slow down.
My sessions are open to anybody seeking support or homework help in writing and basic ELA.
This extends to those with specific learning and mental health challenges.
