About Jason

I graduated with distinction in Voice and Piano from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where I also received numerous prizes including 'The Daniel Davies Memorial Award for a Distinctive Vocal Student', 'Best Singer' Prize, and 'Most Promising Singer' Prize (2 years running). Whilst at college I played the title role in Britten's 'Albert Herring', Emperor Nero in 'The Coronation of Poppea'. and Basilio in 'The Marriage of Figaro'. After graduating I had the privilege of performing with companies such as Opera North and the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in the UK, as well as with opera houses in Germany (Krefeld and Moenchengladbach). Whilst performing the role of Ceruti in Ivor Novello's 'The Dancing Years', in the U.S. I was invited to give a series of masterclasses at the University of South Carolina. I have also previously held teaching positions at Italia Conti in London and for Stagecoach in Brighton and Portsmouth. Solo concert and oratorio work include 'Messiah', 'Elijah', Mozart's 'Dominican Vespers at the Royal Festival Hall, Tippett's 'A Child of Our Time' with the Liverpool Philharmonic, Britten's 'Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings' and Bach's 'St John Passion'. Musical theatre and Operetta roles include Camille in 'The Merry Widow', Hero in 'A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum', The Red Shadow in 'The Desert Song', Marco in 'The Gondoliers', Frederic in 'The Pirates of Penzance'...and a few more! An important time in my musical career was as founding Musical Director of the Actually Gay Men’s Chorus in Brighton, a position I proudly held for over a decade. During this time we recorded an album 'Somewhere For Me' with Universal Records for which I was M.D. and musical arranger. Community work includes a weekly choir at Maycroft Manor Care Home in Brighton Over the course of my career, I have had the opportunity to work with many gifted singers, actors and inspiring teachers. The wealth of knowledge and expertise they have shared has undeniably contributed to my growth as a teacher and performer and to them I'll be forever grateful. I now live and teach in the beautiful village of Falmer just outside Brighton with my partner and dog Morgan. There are great public transport links to Falmer via train, bus (23, 25, 28, 29) or car (A27). Onsite parking is available. I have my own studio and also access to our beautiful village church St Laurence's Falmer for lessons.

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I was lucky enough to grow up in a home that was always filled with music and musicians. My mother was the Musical Director of our local Operatic Society and Church Organist. She was an amazing pianist and organist and as a result I was in shows and the church choir from the age of 7. She started me with piano lessons even earlier so I'm told!
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I have a great love for Early Music, especially Handel and Purcell but any Baroque recordings will get my attention. I think this started at an early age being in performances of 'Messiah' as a chorister and later as tenor soloist and then performing Monteverdi at music college.I also love the world of Operetta having performed in many as a teenager in local societies and then being lucky enough to sing with 'the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company' for a number of years. I have always loved the incredible voice of Australian soprano June Bronhill who was renowned her performances of Lehar and Ivor Novello.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting lesson you could personally give to a student of music.

I love to use with students a fantastic book 'Twenty Four Italian Songs and Arias' alongside a very old book of exercises 'Vaccai' Vocal Method. The first book is what we were given as first year students at college and really lay the foundations of the 'bel canto' style of singing - that being open, well connected resonating vowels with legato line and continuous breath connection. These books can help provide a structure from which further exploration of any genre can be pursued.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

In my experience the organ is one of the most difficult instruments as it involves both hands and feet! I've always loved playing church organs but have to admit my use of pedals has never been that great! I have huge respect for those who can master this instrument!
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

I think it's really important as a performer and a teacher to never stop learning from other professionals. I've worked with some incredible singers and musicians over the years and still continue to learn. Patience and attention to detail are incredibly important in both personal performance and in teaching others.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

The three musicians I would love to meet in a bar in the early hours are Dame Julie Andrews, Jakub Orlinski and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Julie Andrews is a national treasure who has entertained millions over many decades with her distinctive voice. She worked tirelessly for years on the London and Broadway stages before embarking on her remarkable film career. 'The Sound of Music' must be one of the most loved musicals of all time. I've been lucky enough to play the part of Rolf in it and be Musical Director (separate productions!). I'd love to chat with her about the incredible stamina she must have and how she was able to adapt from the stage to the silver screen. Jakub Orlinski is a fantastic counter tenor who has helped to bring baroque music to a much wider and younger audience through his many youtube videos. He was recently in the opening ceremony of the Olympics where as well as singing was demonstrating his break dancing skills. A fantastic performer. It would be fascinating to hear his views on bringing such wonderful period music to a wider audience through modern platforms like Youtube. As for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber he has given us some amazing musicals, my personal favourite being 'The Phantom of the Opera'. It's a masterpiece of theatre. I would just love to meet him and thank him for all the joy he's given to so many people and for the work he has provided for thousands of musicians.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

The wonderful bass baritone Lynton Black who I worked with in 'The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company' (and shared theatrical digs with) once told me about one of his singing lessons at music college. He had a very strict Russian professor of singing and one day turned up for his lesson complaining that he was tired. The professor went over to the studio window and threw it open saying, "Listen to the birds, they sing all day, they are not tired!...Now, we begin!
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I would hope that I bring patience, enthusiasm and a sense of humour to my lessons. I know that's what I would want from a Superprof.
