About Sylvie
As a saxophone teacher, my approach is rooted in the belief that technique and creativity must grow together to support a lifelong love of music. I work closely with each student to create a personalized roadmap that aligns with their level, interests, and musical aspirations. Early lessons focus on tone production, breath control, embouchure development, finger coordination, and rhythmic accuracy. I also emphasize posture and body awareness, helping students play comfortably and avoid strain. But from day one, I introduce expressive tools—how to shape a phrase, use dynamic range, experiment with vibrato, and develop a unique tone. These skills are reinforced not through abstract exercises alone, but by connecting them to music students care about. I incorporate music theory and aural skills in ways that make them directly applicable, showing how harmonic understanding and interval recognition enhance both reading and improvising. Improvisation is not optional—it’s a creative right. We start small: rhythmic echo games, call-and-response exercises, and improvising over one or two notes. As fluency increases, we explore melodic invention, blues scales, chord tones, and solo construction. Repertoire selection is collaborative, and I encourage students to explore various styles—from jazz, funk, soul, and pop to classical saxophone literature. We also work on composing and arranging music, which strengthens their understanding and adds a personal dimension to their musical growth. One of my favorite experiences was helping a student arrange a saxophone quartet version of one of their favorite anime themes—it was a breakthrough in ownership and creativity. I believe in using technology to support learning: students often record themselves, use slow-down apps to analyze recordings, and even create home practice tracks. My ultimate goal is to create a learning space that is rigorous, rewarding, and deeply human—where students can become technically skilled, musically aware, and creatively fulfilled saxophonists.

My approach to teaching saxophone is rooted in the belief that every musician’s journey is unique and should be celebrated with personalized instruction that balances technical foundation and creative exploration. I begin by establishing the essential pillars of good saxophone playing: posture, breathing, embouchure control, and finger dexterity. These elements are crucial for producing a consistent and beautiful tone and preventing injury.
Alongside technique, I emphasize rhythmic precision and expressive phrasing to help students bring music to life. Improvisation is woven into lessons from the start, with a gradual introduction to scales, chord tones, and melodic motifs that empower students to craft their own musical statements. I encourage students to listen broadly and critically, drawing inspiration from jazz legends, contemporary players, and classical saxophonists alike.
Music theory and aural skills are integrated to develop a deep understanding of musical language, enabling students to make informed artistic choices. I utilize a variety of teaching tools including play-along tracks, slow practice apps, and recording software to keep lessons engaging and relevant. Whether a student is preparing for a recital, audition, or simply playing for enjoyment, my goal is to nurture confidence, creativity, and resilience.
Group playing opportunities and ensemble coaching supplement one-on-one lessons, fostering communication and teamwork skills. I have witnessed transformative growth when students embrace both the discipline and the freedom of saxophone playing, moving beyond mere replication to true personal expression. My ultimate aim is to inspire a lifelong love for the instrument and music itself, equipping students with the skills and mindset to thrive as versatile and passionate musicians.
