About Bruce

Some of my career highlights:
- delivering intensive week courses on R to international MSc students in Reykjavik (2008-2012).
- teaching ecological modelling to Research Council funded PhD students from all over the UK, at the University of Stirling (2013-2017)
- Developing interactive web apps for teaching ecological modelling at the University of Stirling (2017-2020)
- Working with students one-to-one on data analysis and modelling at Aberdeen University (2005-2008), The University of Iceland (2008-2012), and Stirling University (2012-2020)
- Carrying out field work onboard fishing boats and at fish farms in Iceland and Scotland; then developing new methods of analysing our data
- Collaborating with scientists from across Europe researching consequences of climate change to the marine environment on the EU funded ClimeFish project (2016-2020)
- Helping scientists deal with ethical issues relating to data and modelling, such as understanding how power analysis can improve the quality of work with animals, and protecting personal data.

How did I get here?
I started my career with a PhD in Computer Science that focussed on improving error messages for programmers. This led to a position as a Computer Science lecturer (Robert Gordon University 2001-2004) where I revised modules on coding to use modern teaching paradigms and tools that focussed on getting students into the right mind-set. Wanting an opportunity to apply my skills to environmental issues, I then did an MSc in Ecology (University of Aberdeen 2004-2005). This resulted in me working in Marine Ecological Modelling, at the University of Aberdeen (2005-2008), University of Iceland (2008-2012) and University of Stirling (2012-2020), giving me practical experience of the difficulties of planning and carrying out field work as well as broadening my statistical skills. Throughout this part of my career, I used my experience in computer science to help colleagues and students to become better data analysts, computer modellers, and coders. This career has given me a unique mix of computing and ecological skills, an appreciation of the knowledge gaps students often have in working with their own data, and experience of practical limitations of performing fieldwork and experiments. I now work freelance as a tutor and consultant on research projects.

I am a former university lecturer in both Ecological Modelling, and Computer Science. I specialise in teaching data skills to life science students, especially those with their own data to analyse for dissertations and PhDs.

I want to help you understand the data you will generate in your own project. We will put the theory you learnt in statistics classes into action, and if you struggled to understand that don't panic: I can deliver practical lessons based on your own data to help you understand the theory, and what your results mean to your own research. We will work with the latest tools such as R Studio. I will help with data visualisation, and even developing interactive web apps in R or Javascript. When you need to develop more complex models, I will help you code in R and Python. When it is time to write up, I will help you describe your methods and results clearly.
