About Laura
I am a practicing artist and licensed art educator with over ten years experience painting and drawing. I teach 7th through 12th grade Art in East Central Minnesota and private lessons/workshops through the City of Eden Prairie. I earned my Bachelors of Science in Art Education with a Minor in Studio Art from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Although I am proficient in a number of mediums, I am most passionate about painting and drawing. I am an advocate for the arts in our schools and communities and truly believe that by embracing the arts, we are equipping the next generation of thinkers and innovators.

My students range from young children to adult learners of all ability levels. For three years, I have taught hundreds of pupils through workshops, private lessons, and art camps - and it never gets old! My teaching methods combine learning by doing with guided practice and demonstrations to gain mastery over the medium.
I start lessons with a short exercise, such as blind gesture drawing or a limited color study - some fun activity to get the wheels turning! A typical lesson begins with a topic or theme that we have decided upon, such as a portrait painting or landscape drawing, and a problem to solve - how to render that subject with limited color options OR mostly geometric shapes.
Upon the first lesson (which I will schedule for free!) I will ask some basic questions about your artistic goals, learning style and interests such as:
- What is your experience with art?
- What subjects/genres interest you?
- Do you have time for homework?
- Do you learn by doing, observing or both?
- Do you prefer completing full projects OR learning technical skills?
My teaching style is very encouraging, interactive, and respectful to supporting the development of a personal artistic style while maximizing technical skills. As the teacher, I will share techniques and strategies during our lessons to help find solutions and guide you through your discovery and practice!
My lessons are for adult learners, high schoolers, and college students who want to tackle drawing (any kind) and ultimately, uncover a pleasure for art making.
