About Nick
Math clicked for me late, and it took good teachers to make that happen. That's the experience I try to give every student.
My path has been unusual. I served as a nuclear-trained submarine officer in the U.S. Navy aboard USS Michigan, where I learned demanding math, physics, and engineering on a tight schedule because the job depended on it. I then earned a PhD in mathematics from The Ohio State University and spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher in Electrical and Computer Engineering. My research in asymptotic analysis has been published in the Journal of Approximation Theory.
I've been tutoring for more than ten years, working with students from high school through graduate school. Whether you're trying to get through your first calculus exam or preparing for a qualifying exam, I take your goals seriously and show up prepared for every session.
I'm based in Columbus, Ohio.

My lessons start with where you are, not where the syllabus says you should be. In the first session I find out what you're working on, what's confusing you, and what your goal is: passing a course, acing an exam, or actually understanding the material. Then I work backward to find the gaps, because most trouble in calculus or physics comes from a shaky foundation earlier on.
A typical lesson has three parts: a short check on what we covered last time, focused work on your current homework or topic, and practice problems you solve yourself while I give feedback. I don't just show solutions. I ask questions that lead you to the method, so you can do it on your own when it counts.
I'm patient, and if an explanation doesn't land, I try another angle: a picture, a physical example, or a simpler version of the problem. I never make a student feel bad for asking a question. I also connect the math to where it's actually used, because knowing why a technique matters makes it easier to remember.
Lessons are for high school students (Algebra through AP Calculus and AP Physics), college students (Calculus I–III, linear algebra, differential equations, physics), and graduate students or professionals who need to refresh or go deeper.
