Objective: Students will learn basic jazz chords, improvisation techniques, and how to play a simple jazz standard. 1. Warm-Up (10 minutes) - Begin with finger exercises to get warmed up. Focus on scales (major and minor) and arpeggios. - Practise playing these scales in different octaves and with different rhythms. 2. Introduction to Jazz Chords (15 minutes) - Explain the concept of seventh chords and extended chords (9ths, 11ths, and 13ths). - Demonstrate how to play a major 7th chord and a minor 7th chord. - Have students practise these chords in various keys. 3. Learning a Jazz Standard (20 minutes) - Introduce the chosen jazz standard. Share its background and significance. - Go through the chord changes and structure of the piece. - Break it down into sections and practise each section slowly. 4. Improvisation Techniques (10 minutes) - Teach students about using scales and modes for improvisation (e.g., using the blues scale). - Encourage them to experiment with improvising over the chord changes of the jazz standard. 5. Conclusion and Review (5 minutes) - Recap what was learnt in the lesson. - Assign practice tasks for the week (e.g., practise the chords, work on improvisation, and play through the jazz standard
