According to me there are two approaches to learn the subject.
First is, read the theory, work out the derivations and then apply your understanding on the problems.
This works fine if you give a lot of time to it and if you have the correct background to pursue the topic.
But a second method is, you understand the results but don't completely follow how it came from after reading. Use the results to solve problems. Or look at solutions of the problems to see how the theory gets applied. Once you do sufficient number of problems, you re-read the theory and then you understand it.
