The purpose of teaching is learning. A lecturer only teaches what he or she considers
important and difficult in the lecture. We have neither the time nor the energy to
teach everything. However, students want and need to know everything. To
paraphrase the old saying, we should be teaching them ‘fishing’ not giving them a
‘fish’. We should encourage students to become active and lifelong learners. We
need to focus on students’ characteristics and their learning styles. When we prepare
a lecture, we need to understand what students want to know and what they need to
know.
In the lecture, students need to move from passive to active learning and from
dependence to independence. We should accept the realisation that different people
learn the same things in different ways, and we need to move learning from teachercentred
to student-centred. We should be aware of, and incorporate into our
teaching, the development of science and technology in our society. In order to
attract students to study chemistry, we should adopt modern methods of flexible
delivery such as multimedia, computational simulation and the Internet thus
reforming the traditional ‘chalk and talk’ teaching approach.
