It is estimated that less than 6 percent of the population can actually solve the Rubik's cube, one of the most popular puzzles of all time and carrying the possibilities of more than 43 quintillion . This data seems intimidating. Is it really that tough? Actually not. With correct guidance any one can ace this colorful puzzle. The only prerequisite is a good cube.
I have trained more than 100 kids of different age groups (6& above) and most of them now can solve 3x3x3 within a minute. My methodology includes basic understanding of the cube (2x2x2, 3x3x3, 4x4x4, 5x5x5, mirror and many more) and then solve the complete cube with beginners method and if student wants we can further move to speed cubing i.e. solving the cubes in minimum possible time. If a student is interested then I am capable of making him/her sub-20 (solving the cube in less than 20 seconds). For speedcubing, I use the CFOP method.
I bought my first cube when I was 16 from a local fair and I was so fascinated by the puzzle that by the end of the day I managed to solve it with the help of the internet. But the turning point came after 2 years when I was approached by some parents to train their kids in speedcubing during my college days. I wasn't sure but soon I started enjoying it and since then I helped many kids to become speedcubers also the urge of improving them helped me to improve myself as a trainer and a speedcuber.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

I was recommended by one of my friends to a parent where I experienced teaching Rubik's cube for the first time. Though they knew I was a newbie they trusted me with their kids and started enjoying it. And after that, there was no going back. I never thought that one opportunity would help me to pursue my hobby as a career.
  • How does your work help society?

Cubing requires one to have a certain level of perseverance. If someone is involved in the process of learning to solve cube, he/she has to avoid other distractions and this is one of the reasons that it is used as the replacement of some bad habits like prolonged gaming or screen time. Also, it boosts confidence in kids. So if in future if they face any problem they can use the Rubik's cube as an anecdote-which was once impossible to solve but with the right approach and perseverance became a cakewalk.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

I started cubing and teaching without any influence but one of the things that keep me driving is the happiness the kids and parents get when I help them to achieve their target which varies from person to person. For some, solving their first cube brings happiness and for some getting sub-20 sec fulfills the desire and I'm glad that I can help in both cases.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

Whenever time allows, I like to travel to different places and I really enjoy dancing. I never think twice to try new things if it intrigues me and this is one of the reasons I started cubing.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

Solving Rubik's cube helped many of my students in different facets of their life. Apart from cubing I even teach mathematics to my students and there have been lots of cases in which initially kids used to hate maths. But once they started solving cubes in a crowd the recognition they got changed their attitude towards problem-solving. Since they now think that their brain works more efficiently as compared to others ( though there is no evidence that cubing makes you intelligent) I managed to use this notion to develop an interest in mathematics. And this actually works.
