About Yewkai
I am a Singaporean and an Engineer by training. I have travelled extensively throughout the world and have gained insights into various customs and cultures which is a tremendous help in terms of cultural sensitivity. For the past twenty over years I have been working overseas; 6 years in the U.S., 13 years in China, and 4 years in Taiwan. During my 15 years as a teacher, I have helped to nurture countless young people in their pursuit of the English language. Recently, my family and I have relocated back to Singapore and I look forward to working again in the field of education in Singapore.

As an English teacher, I prefer to teach on a one-to-one basis or in small groups of up to 3 students (with students on roughly the same level in all 4 skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing). My teaching is usually goal oriented, which means that I help my students to prepare for a certain test like TOEFL, IELTS, or TOEIC. Sometimes I have students coming to me just to improve their English skills. I tailor my lessons based on the need of my students, but in most cases I use standard textbooks and materials that are easily available on the market. I summarize my teaching under two main categories; test taking skills and English language skills. After an initial assessment which may last up to half an hour, I may decide on a course of action as follows: For students that have a stronger foundation, 80% on test taking skills and 20% on language skills. For weaker students, 20% on test taking skills and up to 80% on language skills. A typical lesson consists of about two hours with the first hour of teaching followed by a ten-minute break and then another fifty minutes of teaching. As for qualifications, I have a Diploma in TEFL/TESL and I have taught in universities and international schools (elementary, middle, and high school levels) in China and Taiwan for 15 years. I prefer to teach elementary to middle school students.
