About Tara

I am qualified to a high level and I continue to successfully support the development of children, young people and adults in education, which I have done for many years. In addition, I spend a great deal of time learning new things that support my own personal development and I do my best to keep abreast of developments in my subject areas.

I am a warm character with a calm and non-threatening physical presence. However, that should not underestimate the strength and force of my intellect or my ability to apply this in a direct and clear way to help my students to succeed.

Finally, it is important to note that I have the capacity to learn from my students and my peers and my hope is always that I am challenged by both. This encourages me to continue to learn in order to be the best I can be and I try to encourage the same in my students.

I can offer the following:

• Excellent theoretical and applied subject knowledge, informed by a multi and inter-disciplinary background.

• A compassionate approach that has high expectations but also understands barriers to learning and finds ways to help students overcome these.

• Use of humour and warmth of personality to help students relax and be in the best frame of mind for learning combined with a commitment to consistently give my best to my

• An approach to teaching that, whilst supportive and encouraging, is directive and focussed on motivating students to take responsibility for their own learning.

• An approach to teaching that doesn’t just teach students subject knowledge and how to pass their exams. I assist students to take ownership of their learning through problem solving and critical thinking activities.

• I show students how to apply what they know to their own circumstances or environment and not be afraid of their own voice when it comes to questions, challenge and evaluation in an environment where it is safe to make mistakes. Some of the teaching methods I regularly use in the classroom include, and are not limited to:

o Continual revisiting of key concepts, theories and research through application, games, practice assessments, Q&A, quizzes;

o Didactic teaching using power-point, notebook, interactive textbook, drawing of diagrams and pictures on the whiteboard, scaffolding of exam responses;

o Demonstrating and highlighting the links between concepts, theories and even disciplines to increase student understanding as well as increase the pathways in their thinking;

o Production and sharing of appropriate resources eg. video links, links to current and up to date research summaries, links to content from relevant academic experts in the field, newspaper articles, journal articles, book suggestions, appropriate conferences and seminars and links to study websites;

o Regular assessment both informal and formal, differentiated where necessary and using a range of methods eg. study booklets, cloze exercises, practice exam questions, Q&A in the classroom, games, quizzes, regular formal timed assessment in exam conditions;

o Regular critical feedback on student work either verbally or in writing which is constructive, supportive and maintains student self-esteem and confidence.
