About Matt
I am TEFL certified and have been teaching English to non-native speakers for over fifteen years, starting with primary and middle school students in South Korea under the Daegu Ministry of Education, and continuing with adult learners in the UK on a freelance basis.
My adult tutoring work has included conversational English, Business English, and Medical English, working with students from Spain, Arabic-speaking countries, and South Korea. I understand what it feels like to be a language learner in a foreign environment — I lived and worked abroad myself for several years — and I bring patience and genuine interest in each student's progress to every session.

My ESOL lessons are conversational, practical, and tailored to what you actually need English for — whether that's everyday communication, professional contexts, or building general confidence. I don't follow a fixed textbook; I work from your goals, your level, and the situations where you need English most.
I have taught English to adult learners from a wide range of backgrounds, primarily Spanish and Arabic speakers, covering conversational English, Business English, and Medical English. I adapt my approach depending on whether a student needs to improve fluency, accuracy, vocabulary, or confidence — and usually some combination of all four.
Sessions are one hour, online, and conducted entirely in English with as much or as little structure as suits you.

I had the pleasure of working with Matt as my supervisor during my MSc project in Health Data Science at the University of Exeter. Under his guidance, I developed a demand and capacity planning model for NHS endoscopy services, which involved understanding a complex real-world care pathway, engaging with non-technical stakeholders such as clinicians and operational managers, and implementing an ordinary differential equation model in Python.
Throughout the project, Matt was an excellent tutor and mentor. He was able to explain complex analytical and mathematical concepts clearly while also encouraging me to think independently. When I encountered problems regarding the equation construction and model parameter tuning, Matt always replied promptly and helped me develop my own solutions. His supervision helped me build confidence in approaching an unfamiliar multidisciplinary problem and translating analytical methods into work with practical value for healthcare services.
