About Derek
Hi there! My name is Derek Smith, and I am thrilled to be your teacher. I have a passion for American Sign Language, and I believe every student has the potential to succeed. As a teacher, I aim to create a safe and supportive learning environment where all students feel comfortable asking questions and expressing themselves. I have five years of experience teaching ASL and fifteen years in the public school setting, teaching students with special needs. I am constantly looking for new and innovative ways to engage my students. Whether we are working on a project, having a class discussion, or exploring a new concept, I strive to make every lesson fun and engaging. Outside the classroom, I enjoy finding new restaurants with my wife, biking with my son, and playing board games with my family. It is vital to have a balanced life, and I encourage my students to find activities that bring them joy and help them relax.

Introductory Session: The initial session is essential because it helps me understand your current knowledge level. Once I know your current level, I can place you on a learning track; 1a, 1b, 2a, or 2b.
Pace Chart
A pacing chart is a valuable tool that will assist you in organizing your weekly work. I have included a PowerPoint for all the topics covered. I recommend you refer to the pacing chart weekly for a good idea of what to expect for the next lesson.
Amount of time dedicated to the course
It would help to spend 6-7 hours per week on this course. Some students need more time, while other students need less. You should complete your assignments each week. Set up a schedule to do your work and stick to it.
Weekly Assignments:
I expect you to complete your homework assignment each week. if you need assistance with the homework assignment. Please send me a text message asking for help and I will assist you.
