About Heather

Hi, I’m a qualified teacher with a real passion for science, learning and helping students discover that science can be both fascinating and enjoyable.

I have been teaching for four years. My background in neuroscience and psychology has given me a particular interest in understanding how we learn, think and interact with the world around us.

One of the things I love most about science is that there is always something new to learn. I’m a big believer that learning never really stops — the more you learn, the more you realise how much there is still to discover! I try to bring this curiosity and enthusiasm into my teaching, encouraging students to ask questions, think for themselves and develop a genuine understanding of the subjects they are studying.

Outside of teaching, I love painting, reading, yoga, netball and swimming. I’m always reading or learning something new, and one of my recent favourite books — and a recommendation from me — is The Order of Time by Carlo Rovelli. I found his ideas about time fascinating and a great reminder of just how much there is still to understand about our universe.

My approach to tutoring is to make lessons clear, engaging and tailored to each student’s individual needs. I focus on building understanding and confidence rather than simply memorising content.

I use a combination of explanation, questioning, worked examples, practice questions and regular checks for understanding.

I adapt the pace and level of support depending on the student, and I use exam-style questions and feedback where appropriate to help students develop their exam technique alongside their subject knowledge.

I have experience supporting students with a range of SEND needs and use differentiated resources, clear explanations, structured activities and regular checks for understanding to help students access the curriculum and build confidence.

Lessons are typically 1 hour, although this can be discussed depending on the student’s age and needs.
