  • 1. When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in academics, especially in subjects like maths and science, developed early on in my childhood; I would often stay behind classes and ask my teachers to help me learn topics that are beyond the standard curriculum . I began tutoring initially through helping classmates prepare for assessments and realised that not only am I able to help my classmates to understand the topics but also I'm able to strengthen my knowledge of these subjects as well. Over time, that turned into a passion for tutoring. I officially began private tutoring while still in school, and since then, I've had the pleasure of working with students across different abilities and goals.
  • 2. Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I mainly tutor English Language and Literature, Maths (including Further Maths), and STEM subjects like Chemistry and Biology. In English, I enjoy exploring with students about authorial intents and the impacts of different writing techniques. In Maths, I focus on helping students understand the "why" behind each step, providing them methods to easily grasp the concepts of the topics. If there's one thing I find less engaging, it's rigid memorisation-I much prefer helping students understand ideas than simply recite textbook answers.
  • 3. Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, definitely. One of my biggest influences is my former English teacher Mr. Hedge. He taught me not just how to write better, but how to think perceptively and critically-skills that transformed the way I saw learning. His approach made me realise the power of a good tutor and inspired me to pass that on to others.
  • 4. What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor is patient, adaptable, and empathetic. It's not just about knowing the subject-it's about understanding the student. I think active listening is crucial: every student learns differently, and a great tutor meets them where they are. Encouraging curiosity, building confidence, and maintaining a structured, focused approach matter much more than the knowledge itself.
  • 5. Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I first moved from Hong Kong to the UK, I experienced a great shift in teaching styles. At first, I struggled to adjust, but over time, I realised that bridging different educational cultures gave me a unique perspective-and that's something I now use when helping students from varied backgrounds. It's made me a more flexible and understanding tutor.
  • 6. What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One of my challenges was English Literature-especially poetry comparison at first. Interpreting abstract ideas and comparing them felt daunting and a lot of the times I don't know whether I will be credited with these comparison links. But I realised that practice, paired with a structured approach, makes all the difference. That's why I emphasise essay planning and scaffolding with my own students, helping them build confidence and direction in their answers.
  • 7.Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I'm passionate about education as a whole-especially its power to transform lives. But beyond tutoring, I also enjoy public speaking and debating. I'm currently working toward a future in law, and I'm fascinated by how language, argument, and structure intersect in both fields. Teaching allows me to refine these skills while helping others achieve their own goals.
  • 8. What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I genuinely care about my students. I take time to tailor every session to their specific needs and learning styles, track their progress closely, and ensure they feel heard. Whether it's helping someone go from a Grade 5 to a Grade 8, or supporting a primary school student struggling with stress, I go the extra mile to make learning not just productive, but meaningful.
