About Finlay
Hi - my name is Fin and I'm an 18 year old first year at the University of Exeter. My passions outside of academics include fashion, music, exercise, martial arts, video games and films. I took Maths, English Literature and Media Studies achieving BAA respectively (I was only 2 marks off an A* in English Literature, which was frustrating). Growing up, I was always surrounded by cinema. From a young age, my Dad and I would sit down and watch films, that perhaps I was too young to watch, leading to a love for cinema with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring inspiring my first existential crisis (though I didn't know it at age seven). In conjunction with my love for literature, I began to appreciate the complexities of cinema and the art of filmmaking. I also became to love video games too. At first, it was just for fun. But as I grew older, I began to appreciate video games as an artistic medium and became captivated by the industry behind it. These factors, in addition to my fascination with the digital era and the industries and culture surrounding it, led to my choice to study Media Studies at A-level where I achieved an A overall with an A* in my coursework. My desire to teach Media Studies may stem not just from my love for the subject, but also in how relevant it is in today's society. Moreover, I believe that many tools which contributed to my success in English Literature can be transferred to Media Studies, such as writing techniques. At school, I didn't feel that we were taught how to engage with these texts as thoroughly as possible, in terms of the application of theorists and relevant contexts. So, I seek to help others learn about the subject in a way that I wish someone would have done for me whilst I was at school.

My lessons will guide A-level students in how to evaluate media texts thoroughly, achieved through the application of relevant theorists and cultural contexts. Each lesson will encourage the student to approach each text with nuance, allowing the application of top grade ideas. I am a firm believer in planning and writing essays but also in engaging with the texts from a critical standpoint, utilising rough work as a frame to develop complex ideas and make them more digestible. A typical lesson will be an hour long but I will be setting assignments for the student to complete in their own time, whether that be reading tasks or exam questions. In addition, I can also aid students in their coursework, where I can assist in ideas for their main piece, as well as helping students with their statement of aims.
The first lesson (which is free) will be all about me getting to know the student and the level they're at as well as the texts they're studying. It is more of an introductory lesson, though I will go over some content or some of the students written work. After this lesson, I shall spend some time to familiarise myself with the texts studied by the student and prepare for the following lessons, designing a specific set of goals for the student and a tailored lesson plan.
