About Alison
I have been teaching professionally for more than 30 years, most recently for the Menuhin Foundation of Bermuda. My studio has produced several professional musicians as well as many happy amateur players. I have spent many years as a concertmaster in different orchestras, and played in a professional string quartet. At this time in my career, I wish to teach a small group of students, who will be treated with care, respect, and full attention. I love to teach and welcome students of all ages and levels.

I use the traditional method and tailor my lessons to the learning style of each student according to their strengths aurally, visually, and comprehensively. I use a variety of materials, from the Royal Conservatory books, to fiddle music, pop, and jazz. I combine a strong emphasis on creating a robust technique with fostering a love of music through listening and exploring different genres. I teach all ages and levels. I've taught children as young as 5 and worked with students at a university level. My oldest student yet was 84 - there is no age limit on learning! Students can expect a regular schedule of lessons, supplemented with termly gatherings where students will have an opportunity to play for each other and share group musical experiences. Students are expected to attend regularly and to maintain a practice habit at home. I encourage parents to attend as they are able, especially with younger children. I have a great deal of experience preparing students for music exams, auditions, and performances, and have had several students go on to professional music careers. Not that this has to be the aim - music is a skill that greatly enriches life, at whatever level. I care deeply about my students and really enjoy teaching them. To me, music is a skill for life and an opportunity for individuals of all ages to learn an expressive skill and discover their own potential.

My 13 year old son has been taking violin lessons with Alison for the past four years. She’s a remarkable teacher and woman. She has a wonderfully timed, goofy sense of humor which resonated with my son. She has nurtured his love of the violin and introduced him to a variety of music genres, which he’s greatly enjoyed. Alison is patient and supportive. She is attentive and encouraging. And, she is always, always positive and kind. She instilled confidence in my son when he doubted himself, she pushed him to do his best and beyond what he thought he was capable of, and she gave him the most heartfelt talk when necessary to steer him back on course. She adjusted her approach to classes to meet challenges my son was having, always creative and always sensitive. She became as much a friend to my son (and our family) as a teacher. I highly recommend Alison to anyone, young and old, wanting a very talented and caring violin teacher.
It is my pleasure and honor to give A highly recommend to Ms. Alison Black as a violin teacher for students of any age or skill level. She demonstrates exceptional skill as both a performer and educator , combining deep musical knowledge with a genuine passion for teaching.
In addition to being a gifted teacher, Ms. Alison Black is professional, patient and reliable. Any student would be fortunate to study with her. I’m confident she will continue to make a meaningful impact on aspiring violinists like my son. We are so grateful to Ms. Black to be part of my son in fashion of his music. My daughter has studied the violin with Ms Alison Black for 7 years from age 6. Alison is a very dedicated, patient and highly skilled violin teacher. She has an extraordinary gift for inspiring and guiding her students to fully realize and refine their musical talents. My daughter has always eagerly anticipated each lesson with Alison, a testament to the joy and inspiration she brings to her teaching. Her expert instruction enabled my daughter to earn multiple scholarships, win the 2024 Bermuda Young Artist Competition and earn a Distinction in ALL of her Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) violin exams (Grade 1 to 8). She has my highest recommendation to anyone who would like to study the violin!
If you are looking for an outstanding music teacher for your child, look no further than Ms. Black. She is truly exceptional and has a remarkable ability to inspire and nurture her students. The results speak for themselves—her students have consistently excelled, with two of them winning first place in a prestigious competition last year, and most recently, one of her students achieving first place in the Menuhin Scholarship and the Bermuda Philharmonic Young Artist Concerto Competition.
Ms. Black’s expertise and passion for teaching go above and beyond, making her not just a teacher but a mentor who genuinely cares about her students’ success. By choosing Ms. Black, you are giving your child the opportunity to learn from the best, helping them reach their full potential in music. Don’t miss out on the chance to provide your child with an incredible educational experience; Ms. Black is simply the best choice for their musical journey!View more recommendations
