About Michael
I studied English literature to PhD level but my career was in IT. However literature is my abiding passion. I've edited a magazine of modern poetry and literary criticism for the past 15 years. (I've also recently become a publisher of poetry.) I've written poetry and short stories as well as hundreds of articles exploring classic and modern literature in English and other languages. I'm experienced in proofreading manuscripts and suggesting improvements. I've published academic work on medieval English poetry. I have a particular interest in Shakespeare, classic novels (Dickens, Scott, Austen) and in poetry of all periods right up to the experimental poetry of today. My academic qualifications: BA in English (Exeter), 1979. MA in English (Durham), 1980. PhD in medieval English, 1987. I've also got a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (2018) and a recent DBS Enhanced Certificate (2022). I'll spare you my professional qualifications in business IT but I worked for over thirty years as a computer engineer, team manager and project manager. My other interests: nature, especially wild plants; music (I play the guitar); languages (Swedish, French, Spanish) and exploring the literature of those countries and others. To give a small sample, I've recently written about Bashō, Thomas Middleton, Wole Soyinka, Sheila E. Murphy, George Sand, Dickens, Arnold, Strindberg and Edith Södergran.

Our sessions (typically an hour, but I'm flexible) will be informal, fun, focused but wide-ranging. English Literature is a vast subject because books are always about things. We'll inevitably get into big ideas about life, society, politics, nature, and life on this planet. We'll do a lot of chatting around what you're reading and what you're writing. Lessons will be highly interactive, you won't be just sitting back and listening, but I aim for an environment that's enjoyable and engaging without the pressures of a classroom. Sign me up for a free first lesson and we'll go from there. I'll learn what your goals are and where you are currently and we'll make a plan that suits you, one that's suitable to the level you're currently at and what you're hoping to achieve, for instance in terms of grades, university entrance, upcoming interviews and so on. I can help you with exploring your set books and with gaining fluency and confidence in expressing your thoughts in writing. Or simply with exploring the joys and challenges of reading great books.

Michael is an excellent teacher, he is a very knowledgeable, patient and experienced teacher. He takes the time to make sure you really understand the different elements of English literature. I have learnt a lot from his lessons and can highly recommend him to be your teacher too!
For some time, Michael has been proofreading my translations and guiding me on style and appropriate idiom, as that can be problematic when one translates too literally.
I find his advice clear, valuable and expressed in a way that makes it more palatable - sharing knowledge rather than showing me what a dunce I am!I have known Michael for over thirty years and in that time he has been amazingly helpful with my writing career. I write factual history booklets, childrens books and fantasy novels. Michael has kindly edited some of these and his approach was really useful. Instead of finding fault or criticising, he read my manuscripts, and then made sensible, helpful suggestions in a genuine and informed way. Michael's knowledge of English Literature and language is impressive. He is a kind, helpful and honest person and I would not hesitate to recommend him.
