About Cara
I have worked with small groups of middle schoolers and, individually, with students from kindergarten through freshman in college. In all cases, I respond to questions, build trust, and find common ground in order to help the students improve reading comprehension and/or writing.
One major strength that I try to share is how to read a question. Too often, students answer incorrectly because they didn't parse the question correctly. Learning to read and understand the question or assignment is key to any academic work.

My first meeting is with the student to ask what he or she feels are their weak spots and needs. Afterward, I tailor a plan to improve those weak areas. I have, in the past, used simple scientific articles to improve technical reading comprehension, assigned simple written essays and used the result to teach paragraph organization and clarity, and read fiction with the student to help identify themes.
