When tutoring for a specific topic, I bring materials and notes that I have about that specific topic. I use this material to both prepare myself for the lesson and to show students so that my notes may help them. My goal is to help students so that they can understand the topic enough to answer questions about the topic on their own. I do this by first explaining the material, then I demonstrate how to answer a question about the material. Next, I allow the student to work on the problem by themselves and I will guide them through it. Finally, I will let the student do the problem by themselves and then check their answer at the end. When the student is able to do problems by themselves, they are ready to move on.
