About Vera

I studied Ancient Greek to university level as part of my BA in Classics and French at UCL (First Class Honours, Otto Skutsch Prize, Dean's List), and I’m currently a Classics and Spanish teacher at a GDST school in London, where I also run an after-school GCSE Classical Civilisation programme with local state schools.

I have over ten years of tutoring experience, and I love sharing my passion Ancient Greek language and culture: the grammar, the texts and the world behind them. Greek is rare to find, and I’m happy to teach complete beginners as well as advanced students.

About the lesson

Greek is a fascinating language, and closer to us than you may think. By making connections to what you already know (English words that come from Greek, for example), grammar and vocabulary start to make sense. Through engaging and gamified activities and drills, we will build solid foundations to then read real texts and discover the world behind them.

My Greek lessons suit everyone from complete beginners to advanced students. If you’re starting out, we take the alphabet and pronunciation slowly, then build vocabulary and grammar step by step, until reading Greek feels natural. For GCSE and A level, we work on grammar, translation, set texts and exam technique, following the OCR specification. For university and advanced students, we read Greek in the original, including Homer and Greek tragedy and comedy, and I can help with translation practice, Classics essays and dissertations.

Whatever your level, I plan each lesson around you and your course, and I’m always happy to explain something again in a different way. I like to use a combination of techniques and resources adapted to each student's needs and preferences, including digital resources like interactive quizzes and online vocabulary tools to keep it fun and adapted to you.

Details

My lessons are £55 an hour online and £70 an hour in person. That covers more than the hour we spend together. Before the lessons, I put time into planning material around you, your goals and your course, so every lesson feels made for you. I also keep up with my subjects and any exam board changes, and I’m happy to look over your work before we meet, so we can use our time on the things that will help most.
