About Barnabás
Having mentored in different settings around the globe for 2 years equipped me with the interpersonal and professional skills necessary to ensure the achievement of the intended learning outcomes. I have been working both with individual students and small groups, further refining my attentiveness to fulfil the personal needs of my tutees. This also allowed me to work with pupils across exam boards, including but not limited to AQA Chemistry, Science GCSE, AQA Biology A-level, Edexcel Chemistry GCSE and more. My extensive mentoring experience helps in developing general study skills necessary both for leaving exams and beyond, as well as in fostering independence. I have gained further insight into the problems students face when transitioning to independent learning as a Transition Mentor at UCL, and helped students to improve their general and maths-specific study skills.

Starting with a new tutee, first, we identify knowledge gaps and devise a classes’ & learning plan to fill them in systematically. This might entail, amongst others, clarifying the exam board criteria, incorporating existing feedback and a "placement test". I adapt my sessions to the pupil's style, be it flowcharts, tables or mnemonics. I'm also ensuring focus on past papers. At the end of each class I give tutees a small "homework challenge" and handouts enabling further revision. The boundaries of subjects are not that marked, except, of course, in exam situations, where it is crucial to distinguish the different approaches. E.g. in the description of biochemical processes and biomolecules by biology and chemistry. By distinguishing the key focus one can not only excel in both subjects but a deeper understanding is also gained. Besides improving subject- and self-confidence, tuition is also about fostering independence and good study practice. I seek to inspire my students to find the same joy and fascination in science I've been so captivated by.
