About Dane
Hi, I’m Dane! I am a passionate mathematics tutor of 6 years and counting. I tutor because I truly do love math, and I love making it "click" for my students. I grew up near Folsom, CA and completed my community college district's mathematics curriculum with a 4.0 GPA before graduating from high school. I transferred to UCLA and earned a B.S. in Mathematics of Computation and a Philosophy minor in 2024. I have conducted research at universities across the U.S., with experience in topics including optimization, image processing, vector calculus, combinatorics, and graph theory, and I have presented work at several national conferences. I received a score of 1530 on the SAT and a perfect score of 800 on the (now-discontinued) SAT level-2 mathematics subject test, and I am happy to help high school students with test prep if desired. Primarily, I work with high school seniors and 1st- to 2nd-year college students entering the world of university-level math (e.g. statistics, discrete structures, and calculus) but I have extensive experience with teenagers and older adults. I tutor in several other subjects, most frequently physics and writing.
I try to make my lessons more of a conversation than a lecture. Doing math can be overwhelming even if you like it, and I sometimes wish my own introduction to certain topics had been more tailored. I believe the most important skill in a STEM class is knowing all of your precise definitions, followed by carefully applying the definitions to problems. Too many classes rush to the finish line—I want to help you understand the ideas and the methods first, so that the problems come naturally later!
