About Fiona
Fiona Mai, born in Shanghai, earned her bachelor’s degree in music from UCLA and is currently pursuing her master’s degree at USC. She is studying under the highly sought-after professor Antoinette Perry as a recipient of the Thornton School scholarship. Her piano journey began under the tutelage of teacher and pianist Wei Coglio, who quickly equipped her with the skills and opportunities to perform regularly. Fiona has given recitals in venues ranging from intimate theaters to Stanford’s concert hall, and achieved numerous placements in competitions hosted by USOMC and USIMC. During her pre-college years, she underwent rigorous training with concert pianist Gwendolyn Mok and secured several scholarships to study with David Kaplan at UCLA. As an undergraduate, Fiona was twice nominated for UCLA’s Rubinyi Award, invited to perform at the 2024 Chancellor’s Recital, and participated in multiple high profile masterclasses. She has worked with esteemed artists including Gabriela Montero, Kevin Kwan Loucks, Ning An, Konstantinos Valianatos, and received extensive guidance from Inna Faliks and Liza Stepanova. Fiona has also collaborated and performed chamber music with renowned violinist Xenia Deviatkina-Loh and mezzo-soprano Michelle Rice, as well as UCLA students from various music departments. Her musical commitments have made her a regular presence at both of UCLA’s concert halls. She graduated summa cum laude in 2024 as a 4-year Shapiro scholar.

All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to real lessons experienced by the students of Fiona.
Perfect! I am sure you will agree that those of us who are asked to write many recommendations, can sometimes find the task quite tedious and even boring. However, when one is asked to write about a truly mesmerizing and life-changing individual, the task becomes almost pleasurable.
Such is the case now when I write to you on behalf of a superlative young concert pianist, Ms. Fiona Mai, whom I have known since April 2024, when she started sharing her love for music and for life with my thirteen-year-old daughter.
Ms. Mai has recently earned her Bachelor's degree from UCLA, and we were only too delighted to find out that she will actually stay in town for her Master's degree at USC Thornton. Fiona makes playing the piano a truly joyful experience that has also changed my daughter's life in many aspects! A sure master of the core repertory, Fiona's (teaching) style is full of sophisticated attention to detail. Ms. Mai is a winner in every way, incredibly warm, patient and encouraging. She easily ensures that my daughter reaches her musical potential and aspirations while always having a wonderful time with her.
In summary, this is an enthusiastically supportive letter. I know that Ms. Mai will be the perfect (piano) teacher for anyone, and I wish you every success in attracting her! Recommending Ms. Mai as a solid A plus teacher would be an understatement.View more reviews
