About Sreevani
When looking at a single color, we see only a monotone vision. However, when looking at a rainbow, we see an elegance unique to a mélange of colors.
Growing up in a traditional Indian Hindu family, it was a mandate to connect to my culture: this happened musically and linguistically.
I was first exposed to my culture through the art of Carnatic music, which showed me the immense depths awaiting my discovery beneath the two-syllable word, music. Moreover, it automatically inspired the music of my home country, America, in my heart. Having enjoyed both forms of music, Carnatic and American, I envisioned a union of the two, beautiful like the colors of the rainbow.
A melody in Carnatic music, that stood out to be more than compatible was Kalavati. Kalavati means one who enchants with beautiful nature, a sentiment captured by the melody’s sound, making it my favorite raaga. Knowing this I was determined to establish a Kalavati-American mixtape. Through my intense surfing on my Spotify playlist, I finally found a song that sounded alike: “Right to It” by Louis the Child. Using my experience in notation writing for Carnatic songs, I decided to use the same skill for this song: marking the position, measuring the length of the intervals, and matching them note for note. After completing this, I used my veena, an ancient classical instrument to create an instrumentalized version of my notation to finalize that this song was indeed in Kalavati. I then infused the beat that suited a certain eight count rhythm in Carnatic music, named Aadi Thaala. To embellish this further, I chose a Kalavati sitar piece composed by Ustad Nishant Khan to fuse with “Right to It”. With this, I created my first Carnatic-American mixtape which started off with the first stanza of the sitar piece and ended with the last line of “Right to It.”
Seeing how many ancient musical songs were written in Sanskrit, an interest in learning this language arose. Sanskrit possesses a unique grammatical structure that relates every single word’s meaning to its name and acknowledges sentences formed in any form, like a noun placed before an adjective followed by a verb. My passion for exploring a language that stemmed from my culture pushed me to join an online course, Samskritam As a Foreign Language (SAFL). Through the course, I mastered concepts such as conjugating different forms and tenses of verbs and nouns, ultimately untangling the meaning of ancient scriptures and poems. By sophomore year, I was able to connect its words to the words of my mother-tongue, Telugu, and start a new project to decipher Carnatic songs that were written in Sanskrit and Telugu. Learning Sanskrit developed not only my skill of logical thinking but also my instinctive use of other foreign languages such as Spanish and the basic coding language of Computer Science. Thus, conjugating and declining the different tenses and forms of Spanish verbs and nouns came naturally to me, and I was able to comprehend Spanish and zoom through Spanish texts in no time, something all my other friends were struggling with. In terms of coding, the flexibility of Sanskrit was applicable to the mathematical flexibility required to problem solve in Java code.
A rainbow harmonizes each and every color; this is why a rainbow is so appealing to the eye. With Carnatic Music being my deep-rooted partner, I could create my mixtape that allowed me to distinguish the musical genetics that exist in me. Most importantly, it taught me how to combine the two cultures I owed my character to. On the other side, Sanskrit gave me a multilingual tool to communicate with my fellow friends who speak Spanish, Hindi, or “code”. In the context of music and language, my Indian culture has taught me to be a rainbow who is strong in its own colors and has an open heart that welcomes every culture.

The nature of my personal teaching experience begins with the language of Sanskrit. After years of being exposed to this ancient language, my fascination and appreciation for the language inspired me to pursue the journey of teaching a group of middle and high schoolers the basics of Sanskrit at the Evergreen Montessori School near my house. At first, I was scared to teach in front of a whole group of people because I had always been in the the learner’s chair, never the teacher’s chair. But as I started teaching I quickly realized this was a win-win situation for all parties: I got the opportunity to enhance my Sanskrit-speaking skills as well as strengthen my communication abilities, and at the same time my students had the access of learning a new language, the language that means a lot to me.
Starting off as a tutor in a small school led to me travelling across the United States (and eventually to India!) to teach Sanskrit to children of all ages who have travelled from many different parts of the world. This helped me improve my confidence in the art of teaching. But I felt as though my journey on the path of becoming a great teacher was just beginning. Soon I started attending tutoring clubs frequently, and began holding small tutoring sessions for another one of my favorite subjects: math. My friends and cousins all came to my small sessions to get help from me in Basic Algebra , Algebra 1, Calculus AB, and other math subjects.
All of this experience of tutoring has helped me realize that I am continuously growing stronger in both the linguistic and mathematical fields, and with these established skills I am able to perform well academically in my Discrete Math and Calculus BC classes at my university, the University of California, Santa Cruz.
