About Summer
I have studied art at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan) University of Michigan (Ann Arbor,Michigan) and SACI (Florence, Italy) I have worked as an assistant to children's book author and illustrator, Jim Benton, for four years, and I currently teach classes to both children and adults at The Paintbrush (Chicago, Illinois).
In my own creative practice I work with many different styles and mediums but specialize in illustration. I have a graphic novel and a children's book in development right now while also licensing my work on product, taking commissions, and selling originals.
I have been an artist all my life and am passionate about helping others experience the joy of creating artwork. I am as much interested in the technical side of art as I am the soulful and create a learning environment that supports the growth of both.

I can teach at any level, from beginner to intermediate to advanced. Nobody is too young or too old to begin making art and I will help you cultivate the skills you need to express yourself. I have a minor in Art History as well so I can teach you about the theory and history of the techniques we study.
I always craft the lessons and class around the student and what they hope to achieve. Students are invited to bring samples of the kind of work they would like to make and I will work with them to get there. You can also come with nothing but a desire to learn and we can study a different style or medium every class. In our first session, we'll talk about what you hope to get out of the class and build a curriculum around you.
