About Dr James
I am a University of Oxford Philosophy DPhil (PhD) graduate with a passion for Philosophy and Maths (with a particular interest in Logic), and a passion for teaching. I have extensive experience as an official Oxford college tutor, including experience teaching all Logic papers offered by the Oxford Philosophy faculty. I also have experience tutoring GCSE and A-Level Maths.
When teaching, I strive to create a welcoming environment where tutees feel comfortable thinking aloud. With this approach, I am able to help tutees realise their full potential.

I am very keen, and able, to tutor:
- Logic (at any level)
- Philosophy (any topic to at least undergraduate level; some topics to any level)
- Maths (up to A level)
- Entrance Exam Preparation (e.g. 11+ and Thinking Skills Assessment)
- University Application Preparation (e.g. Oxbridge Interview preparation)
I recently completed a DPhil in Philosophy at the University of Oxford, funded by a Clarendon Fund scholarship and Christ Church Holford scholarship, with a research focus in logic. Before the DPhil, I completed the BPhil in Philosophy at Oxford with distinction in 2017, funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, and the BA in Philosophy at UCL with first class honours in 2015.
Throughout the DPhil, I taught at various Oxford colleges, including tutoring all logic papers offered by the Oxford Philosophy faculty. I have been:
(i) a teaching assistant to Prof. Volker Halbach and Prof. Alex Paseau, each for the Oxford Finals paper Philosophical Logic
(ii) a tutor for the Oxford Prelims paper Introduction to Logic
(iii) a tutor for the Oxford Prelims paper Elements of Deductive Logic
(iv) a tutor for Philosophical Logic
I also privately tutored a UCL Philosophy MPhilStud student for a graduate logic course, and have tutored GCSE and A-level Maths.
In my tutorials, I strive to create a very inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable thinking aloud and views no question as too basic to ask. I also try to instil in my students a high precision in their thought. For example, when discussing questions in a Logic or Maths tutorial, I will encourage, and enable, tutees to explain questions precisely, and to justify fully each step of their answer.
My tutorials are usually 1-2 hours, but I am willing to accommodate a client's preferred tutorial length.
