About Garrett
I started tutoring Spanish and French in 2016 and have now taught 7 different students, both college-age and adults (20-45). These students were of all levels- beginner speakers, intermediate, advanced, and heritage speakers. Some were enrolled in classes at the University of Texas at Austin, as well as Austin Community College. Additionally, I had a student studying for the A2 level of Spanish in order to obtain citizenship from Spain via the Sephardic right of return law (which I also obtained). I currently have one student for private lessons for whom I am creating a personalized program. Because I specialized in translation and worked in bilingual settings (both in Spain and for the Latin American Markets), I have achieved a solid overarching knowledge of various topics in Spanish. Doing so allows me to fill the cultural gaps, and help students take a practical approach to acquire the language.

I like to make learning fun, with applied learning. I first like to walk students through the basics of conjugation, accents, and pronunciation. Regarding vocabulary, I encourage students to make direct relationships to objects and concepts in the target language so that instead of seeing the object, identifying in their native language, then translating, they create direct associations, thus improving fluency. Doing so also enables them to begin thinking in the target language, and apply the concepts to their daily lives outside of lessons. After teaching a specific concept, I like to also provide cultural references such as songs as a mode of solidification. As a native English speaker who has achieved bilingual fluency, I also am able to give ample examples in English as a reference to clarify all confusion around ways of speaking in the target language (ie. use of the subjunctive, etc.), and achieving connections between the two languages and leaps in thought. This is where I use my background in translation- creating a deep understanding of the feeling/cultural context that words and expressions carry, and helping students to do the same.
