About Darla
A bit about myself:
I graduated with a 4.0 CGPA from the University of Toronto with a combined degree in sciences and humanities, during which time I received multiple awards for best in-class standings and commendable essays. For the purposes of my degree I wrote somewhere in the ballpark of 50+ essays in a range of disciplines (including philosophy, life sciences, anthropology, psychology, and religious studies). While at school I was a resource for peers who wanted to bring their performance to the next level. Once I graduated, this organically evolved into a more formal writing/tutoring service.
On a professional basis, I have been doing academic writing and research since the fourth year of my undergraduate degree when I started as an undergraduate fellow researching healthcare technologies. I have been published in multiple journals, with writing ranging disciplines in the social sciences, machine learning, healthcare governance and policy, and psychiatric services;
I also have served on multiple award committees where I judge essays, public writing, and creative writing for prestigious awards.

Do you want to stand out to your professors as a talented, creative, and bright student? Do you want to build skills that will take you far not only in your academics, but also into your career and life?
Let’s face it: with the accessibility and availability of ChatGPT, there is little need for a writing tutor to revise the structural elements of your writing like grammar and vocabulary. However, there is still a way to go to become a talented and creative student – one who stands out to your teachers or professors for virtues like style and originality. More importantly, one who feels completely confident in themselves and their own abilities. To do this you will need to learn how to develop a nuanced and meaningful thesis, develop your ideas clearly, and generate and communicate original insights. We will get you great grades; this will come as a natural result of you becoming a stronger thinker and writer.
I am offering my services to aid in:
- University-level essay-writing → I am happy to jump in with you at any stage in the writing process. We can lay the groundwork together (including research strategy, thesis-construction, and outlining) or you can bring me a draft or outline which we can then transform into a powerful, compelling, complex, nuanced, and genuinely worthwhile piece of academic writing;
- High-school English tutoring, including essay-writing and university applications;
- Constructive feedback, exercises, and editing for creative writing (for both personal and educational applications);
- Guidance and revision for your university applications and cover letters;
- Language practice and acquisition for English-language Learners.
Here’s the thing: an education isn’t just about completing your assignments and getting a decent grade. Although I recognize the reality of a student’s need to perform well, and the sometimes detached approach that is required to do so in so many courses at once, the results-oriented approach is an unfortunate byproduct of our careerism and the style, structure, and evaluation of university education. But ultimately what matters is your own ability to think creatively, analytically, and insightfully and communicate these thoughts to others. If you do this, I assure you the grades will come. Like I said before, we will get you great grades! But this will be an added benefit to the primary and ultimately more fulfilling process of you becoming more original, curious, insightful, and capable. Through our time together, you will learn strategies to become a more self-confident student and thinker – a skill that will take you much farther than one high-scoring assignment will.
